London can be a very Lonely place, if you are getting on. There is an old lady living on the ground floor flat beneath me in Stoke Newington. I never see anyone visiting her. Sometimes I knock on her door to find out if she needs any shopping. At first she refused. I guess she was nervous. I started helping her in her front garden instead, whenever I found her there pottering about. I would move anything heavy she needed moving and then head up to my flat.
I write down what she wants, buy it and then give her the receipt with the shopping, so that she can go through it herself before paying me. It's a good approach. You never know what some nosey neighbour with a problem with foreigners might say to her when I am not around.
Last Christmas I had a bit of extra cash, a bonus from my boss, so I decided to spend some of it on her. I paid for cleaners to come round and give her place a really good clean. She was elated. You might want to try doing something similar for an old or disabled person living near you: Sofa Cleaning, House Cleaning.
