Is Green Cleaning Your Sofa a Challenge?

The basic mistake we all may commit in upholstery cleaning is to use any product we can find. You may be lucky once, but in most cases you will end up having a permanently stained couch that only a skilled professional would know how to clean. 

Upholstery falls into two main categories: washable and unwashable. So you have to conduct upholstery cleaning accordingly. Check the label to be sure. If you are doubtful about the fabric or in case there is no label and sticker, test the upholstery by applying a small amount of the cleaner on the back of the couch. In case there is no discolouration you may proceed to washing it. Here is a recipe for a good washable upholstery cleaner:

Mix in a bucket half a cup ammonia, half a cup dry stain remover in half a gallon warm water. You will need a second bucket with 1 cup vinegar mixed with 1 gallon water. Scrub the stained area with an old towel dipped in the first solution and then rinse with the vinegar. Then dry. 

In case your couch has a velvet like texture you should dry clean it. There are cleaning solvents that are not toxic. The right way to treat spots is to put some cleaning solvent on a soft cloth and and scrub gently. Wipe with a clean cloth.
