There are those of us who possess some very high quality and expensive rugs, made from natural fibers. In this case – Sheepskin. Here are useful tips on maintaining your Sheepskin carpet.
If at any time you decide to put away your carpet do so in a cool airy place, without direct sunlight. Prolonged stay in a plastic bag is not recommended because the wool needs to breathe.
When washing such a rug, the only restriction is that you must not use hot water, as it may damage the pelt.
A wash by hand is done in a mild liquid detergent in water 40 degrees Celsius tops. Don't use soap or washing powder that contain enzymes or bleach, or the ones with alkaline. And avoid fabric softeners.
Rinse the rug in warm water. Hand squeeze as much water from the rug as possible. In carpet cleaning of this type it is recommended to use biodegradable camp soaps or Lanolin based wash solutions.
You have an option of machine washing the carpet as well. Set the machine to “wool wash” cycle and the water temperature to 40 degrees Celsius. The chemicals that you may use are basically the same as with the hand wash, just make sure that they are usable in the washing machine.
Small spills and spots can be cleaned with warm water and a mild soap. Applying talcum powder from time to time will make the rug feel fresh.
To dry the rug you can simply hang it out behind the house, so to avoid direct sunlight. Extreme heat may damage the rug so no ironing, don't put it in front of a radiator or near a steam pipe.
Eventually after the washing the wool may curl itself. To finish the carpet cleaning take a comb or wire pet brush and brush the wool. It is best if it's done in both wet and dried state.
Good luck !
