Shopping at thrift stores and estate sales is a great fun, especially in cosmopolitan cities like London as you can always find a beautiful piece of vintage silverware that is waiting for some cleaning to reveal its amazing beauty. There are many commercial cleaners that can be used to restore the glosy of your silver, but they contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful, that's why I prefer to utilize common household products to clean silver.
Baking soda is one of the most popular natural cleaning products as it removes all kinds of dirt. When it comes to deep cleaning silver, baking soda is what you need. It works wonderfully for heavily tarnished pieces. Let's make a cleaning mixture to restore the beauty of some silver pieces.
- Fill a large pot with water and put it on the stovetop to boil. Make sure that you don't overfill the pot, there should be at least two inches of space at the top.
- When the water boils remove the pot from the stovetop and put a piece of aluminum foil on the bottom of the pot. Place your silver items in the water and start pouring baking soda into the spot. It'll foam and bubble.
- The baking soda like remove the tarnish from your silver and make it shine again. The aluminum plays important part in the cleaning process as it attracts the tarnish instead of your silver items.
- Once the silver is clean, wash it with soapy water to remove the baking soda.
The deep cleaning will be most efficiently if the water is really hot. I found that this method is the best for removing tarnish from silver items.
